At Mount Nittany Health, we are committed to taking healthcare beyond our walls and into our community. A recent incident at Mount Nittany Health Phillipsburg serves as a tremendous example of this commitment—illustrating our dedication to serve our community members, wherever they are.
A patient walked into our Philipsburg location in need of care. He recently had hip replacement surgery, and his condition was poor.
In talking with the patient, the nurses learned that his cellphone was out of prepaid minutes and the elevator in his apartment building was out of order, making it so that he had to slide himself down the stairs to get out of his apartment building because he had no ability to call for help.
They urged him to go via ambulance to the emergency department, but he refused to go until he could get minutes added to his phone and get a change of clothes from his apartment.
Mandy Smith, LPN, immediately jumped in to assist him with getting more minutes on his phone. Mandy, along with Brittany Phillips, RN, and Olivia Gormont, MA student, then followed the patient back to his apartment to help him get a change of clothes. They also spoke with the building manager regarding the safety issue of the elevator being out of order. Then, they stayed with the patient until EMS arrived.
We commend Mandy, Brittany, and Olivia for going above and beyond to care for this community member— both as a patient and a neighbor in need.
The actions of our nurses in Philipsburg represent one of many examples of our staff’s dedication and commitment to clinical excellence and compassionate care. Join us this Nurses week in commending our nurses, and leave a message on our virtual gratitude board at: courageousatheart.org.
